Student surge: Is your library system top of the class?

In the summer, The Times reported: “The projected boom over the next few years is driven by a “triple whammy”  of a 20 per cent rise in the number of 18 year olds in the UK by 2026, more 18 year olds applying to university and a surge in overseas students led by China, whose numbers are expected to outstrip those form the whole of the  EU by 2025.”

With this increased volume in mind, academic libraries should take this opportunity to assess their existing  systems and find ways to make improvements that will support staff and enhance the student experience. Universities need to ensure that they are matching the increased student numbers with an increased investment in staff, equipment, and resource.

Upgrading to a self-service library system provides greater flexibility for busy library staff and encourages  responsible use of the library by students. Self-service kiosks allow students to review their account status,  reserve items, and check out multiple items at one time, reducing queues at peak times.
