Long-term customers the University of Sussex sought an upgrade to their existing access control solution, focusing on data gathering and space optimisation.
The University of Sussex was founded in 1961 in Falmer, close to Brighton. Serving more than 17,000 students, it is known for its world-leading research in fields such as Development Studies. The on-site library is home to more than 800,000 volumes, with specific access control needs for its main entrance and research areas.
In March 2025, the University of Sussex began exploring upgrades to its existing access control hardware. The current system, which had been operating on AdvaNova’s Sentry software for many years, was approaching the end of its effective lifecycle. Alongside the need for a technology refresh, the university also needed to address evolving security requirements and operational staffing considerations.
With attendance returning to pre-pandemic levels, the library was approaching full capacity. At the same time, opening hours had been reduced, with staff available between 8am and 7pm and porters providing out-of-hours access.
