Access control remains a challenge for academic libraries and other venues, which is why we’re always innovating our turnstiles. Developments in the Glassgate access barrier range have proven successful for many of our clients, including the Abdus Salam Library at Imperial College London.
As of 2024, The Glassgate range offers the 150 Plus and 250 Plus models. These safety-first installations provide robust access control for areas with high footfall.
What are Glassgate access barriers?
Glassgate access barriers are high-strength turnstiles designed for use in settings with high footfall, such as academic libraries. They are made with toughened glass panels attached to motorised hinges, and are uni or bidirectional.
The barriers allow access to buildings via a flatbed scanner, which scans a card to authorise entry. If for any reason the user’s card is not valid, such as an expired student card, the gates will not open.
Security measures
Glassgate access barriers have been designed with ‘holding force’. This refers to pressure applied to the glass panels, which are built to open if too much force is placed upon them.
In normal use, the barriers can be forced through. This serves to prevent barrier damage when excessive force and misuse is applied. The barrier will alarm locally and will automatically reset. The Glassgate 150 Plus and 250 Plus have substantially higher holding force rates, which means significantly greater effort and misuse is needed to open the lane, while still preventing the barrier from suffering damage.
This new design lowers the chance of forced entry while addressing safety concerns. Likewise, it prevents breakages and engineer callout fees – keeping library costs to a minimum.
New additions to the 150 Plus and 250 Plus
On top of a greater holding force, there are other security features on the Glassgate range. The 150 Plus is available at waist height, making it ideal for accessibility. The 250 Plus, meanwhile, is available in various heights up to 1700mm, making it impossible to jump over.
This makes the 250 Plus ideal for venues where security is paramount, such as family attractions. The higher-spec 250 also features a locking brake option for added assurance.
The 150 Plus model is now wider, offering more access options for wheelchair users or carers. Standard access gates measure at 914mm, compared to these new 1,000mm products. Intelligent recognition systems can also detect wheelchairs and human shapes to allow for seamless entry.
Key benefits of the Glassgate range
The Glassgate range prevents unauthorised entry without compromising accessibility or safety. As a truly versatile product, it is compatible with multiple ID cards and can link up to internal access control systems like Sentry. This gives libraries the power to analyse their data while managing crowds.
It’s also simple to install, with cables coming up through the floor to minimise disruption. In cases of temporary building works or listed buildings, the gates can also bolt on to base plate ramps – great for moving around.
Each turnstile has high-sensitivity sensors at various heights. With capacity for up to 40 entrants per minute, Glassgate is perfect for controlling crowds and reducing human intervention.
We’ve had fantastic feedback from academic libraries, who noted their ease of use and compatibility. With more time to focus on serving customers, library staff will benefit from these safe and accessible gates.
